The Department of Geology and Environmental Science ( at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in hydrology and water sustainability. Given the recent and expected environmental change that impacts water quality and its presence, the Department seeks a hydrologist to develop the capacity to understand these issues of regional, national, and global importance. We seek a colleague with expertise in identifying and modeling hydrologic change (e.g., human-, climatic-, or planetary-driven shifts) and an interest in solutions to water challenges. Our goal is to hire a colleague who uses a combination of quantitative field-based measurements, data-driven modeling, or remote sensing to better understand water-climate-human interactions. Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to surface water hydrology, groundwater hydrology, the interacting roles of climate variability and land use change on hydrologic processes, physical models of ecohydrologic processes from the plot to the global scale, as well as volcanic and planetary hydrology.
The successful candidate will complement existing research clusters and establish an externally funded, internationally recognized research program that complements existing strengths in the Department. Strong collaborative opportunities exist across the University, including the nationally awarded Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory ( – a faculty-led group that drives knowledge co-production among local, regional, and national governments, non-profits, and community groups with a mission of finding sustainable research-based solutions to water challenges, the Climate and Global Change Center ( the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation ( and the emerging Pitt Space Initiative. Other research areas in the Department include environmental biogeochemistry, surface processes, geophysics, volcanology, planetary science, and more. Teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The department offers a B.S. degree in Environmental Science, a B.S. degree in Geology, a B.A. degree in Environmental Studies, a Geology Minor, a GIS certificate program, a professional M.S. in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) & Remote Sensing, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology and Environmental Science. The Department is a highly interactive community dedicated to the mutual success of our faculty and students. We offer low teaching loads and highly competitive start-up, compensation, and benefits packages.
