Job Description:

The Department of Criminal Justice has an open position for a one-term, renewable full-time faculty position for the Fall 2024 semester.


The Department of Criminal Justice seeks a full-time faculty person to join a burgeoning and vibrant undergraduate program. The area of specialization is open. Applicants with experience advising criminal justice students, participation in service-learning activities, and candidates from underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to teach a range of undergraduate criminal justice core courses, share in departmental activities (including advising/mentoring students, program assessment, participating in student recruitment/retention activities, etc.), actively participate in scholarship, and in department and university life. Ideally, applicants will have an active research agenda (commensurate with rank), experience teaching, a dedicated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population and seek to contribute to a growing major.

Race & Ethnicity, Policing, Theory, Law, Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Advocacy, Gender, Courts, Victimology, Research Methods, Criminal Procedures, and/or Civic Engagement.

Responsibilities:

Criminal Justice is the study of crime, the legal system, and how each relates to society as a whole. It is a multidisciplinary field, incorporating aspects of sociology, psychology, law, political science, history, philosophy, and economics. Criminal Justice instructors, generally seasoned professionals with significant experience in the field, provide education and training to students in academic and professional settings.

Criminal Justice faculty teach courses in criminal justice, corrections, theory, research methodology, victimology, gender, juvenile justice, race, ethnicity & crime, and law enforcement administration. Faculty prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate or professional students. Faculty members will teach several courses. Below are some additional responsibilities for the faculty member.

  • Developing the course syllabus.
  • Preparing and delivering lectures and presentations.
  • Preparing course materials, grading assignments, grading tests, and working with students to ensure understanding of the material.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Maintain student attendance records.
  • Administering course evaluations.
  • Conduct office hours.
  • Instructors need to follow developments in the criminal justice field in order to ensure that their instruction is relevant to students.

Duties Outside of the Classroom

  • Serving on committees.
  • Attending in-service training and meetings or advising individual students.
  • Attending events that are put on by the Criminal Justice Department and the University.
  • For this position, faculty do not have to conduct significant amounts of original research or publish in academic journals, although doing so may be beneficial for those wishing to advance into high-level or full-time positions.


Level: Assistant/Associate Professor


Qualifications:

A Ph.D. from an accredited institution specializing in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a related field is preferred; a JD is also an appropriate degree for this position. ABD candidates may be considered if degree completion is expected by January 1, 2025.


Experience: Excellence in university teaching, a strong Christian commitment, experience in service to a university, evidence of scholarly research activity (commensurate with rank) in the field of criminology/criminal justice.


Workload: Full-time faculty position in Criminal Justice.

Compensation:

$66,560 to $110,160 is th e annual salary for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package .
