Editorial Assistant, RISE x Penguin Workshop + World of Eric Carle (Open to Remote)

Penguin Young Readers is seeking a child-focused editorial assistant to support two editors and one publisher in developing and publishing picture books and board books for 0-5-year-olds. This role spans two imprints, works with nonfiction and fiction books, and reports to the Publisher, who oversees both imprints:

RISE x Penguin Workshop develops books that serve to empower young readers, such as the ALA Notable First Conversations series, the Ezra Jack Keats award-winning title How To Say Hello to a Worm, singer/songwriter Ani Di Franco’s The Knowing, Caldecott-winning Aida Salazar’s When Moon Blooms , and New Yorker cartoonist Liana Finck’s You Broke It! The Role

  • Taking part in regular creative meetings with both the RISE team and the WoEC team to touch base on existing projects, brainstorm new titles, review manuscripts or layouts, problem-solve, and strategize
  • Performing administrative tasks such as maintaining schedules, spreadsheets, and internal data systems; mailing packages (when relevant); completing forms; ordering books for the editors and authors; coordinating interdepartmental meetings; gathering information per internal requests
  • Corresponding with authors, illustrators, agents, and other industry colleagues
  • Assisting with the project acquisition process: request pricing from Production, run profit & loss statements, research competitive titles, generate acquisition / contract paperwork, update the books system, pull sales figures from Bookscan, and stay on top of internal deadlines.
  • Reviewing and tracking manuscript submissions with editorial team
  • Conducting research for projects including, but not limited to, photo research, market research, illustrator research, and authenticity reader research
  • Preparing manuscripts for copyediting
  • Tracking awards and accolades
  • Writing cover copy, catalog copy, web copy, publisher positioning sheets, and title information sheets

The Essentials:

  • Specific interest in and enthusiasm for 0-5 publishing: board books, novelty books, and picture books for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers
  • Strong interpersonal / communication skills and a strong interest in working and learning collaboratively
  • An organized, linear, meticulous, and deadline-oriented approach to work
  • Superior writing skills with a reverence for clarity
  • Strong research skills (as applied to generating art notes, sourcing competitive titles for comparison, and cross-checking subject-specific information per book)
  • Consistent follow-up and follow-through, and the ability to time-manage and prioritize a multitude of tasks
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe PDFs, PowerPoint, Instagram, and the ability to swiftly learn new systems
  • Exposure to 0-5 year-olds (from any side: teacher, babysitter, camp counselor, parent, aunt or uncle, etc.) is a plus

The salary for this position is $48,000.  All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
