Key responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and other team members to understand the project requirements and design intent.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of building codes, regulations, and industry standards related to the design and construction of public schools.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive project specifications that detail the materials, products, and construction methods to be used.
  • Research and select appropriate materials and products based on project requirements, performance criteria, sustainability goals, and budget constraints.
  • Ensure that the specifications are aligned with the project's design intent and coordinate with the design team to address any conflicts or inconsistencies.
  • Review and evaluate product data, samples, and manufacturer's literature to ensure compliance with project requirements and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with the procurement team to obtain accurate pricing and availability information for specified materials and products.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry trends, advancements in construction technology, and evolving building codes and regulations.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide technical expertise and guidance regarding specifications and related issues.
  • Collaborate with construction teams during the construction phase to address any specification-related inquiries, clarifications, or changes.
Knowledge, skills, and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a Specifications Writer in the architectural or construction industry, preferably with a focus on educational or public sector projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of building codes, regulations, and industry standards related to the design and construction of public schools.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to create accurate and detailed specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to review and evaluate product data and literature.
  • Proficiency in using specification writing software and other relevant tools.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with architects, engineers, and other team members.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design practices and LEED certification is a plus.
  • Professional certifications or affiliations related to specifications, writing or construction industry standards are desirable.
